Indonesia and Singapore Solidify Digital Sovereignty Through Landmark Nongsa Changi Submarine Cable Deployment

Indonesia and Singapore have successfully landed the Nongsa Changi Cable in Batam, marking a historic milestone in regional digital infrastructure. This high-capacity subsea system, led by Telin, BW Digital, and Nongsa Digital Park, establishes a direct digital corridor to support artificial intelligence, cloud services, and economic growth across Southeast Asia.

In a monumental stride toward establishing Indonesia as a premier international digital powerhouse, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, a subsidiary of the state-owned public company PT Telkom Indonesia, alongside BW Digital and strategic partner Nongsa Digital Park, celebrated the successful landing of the Nongsa Changi Cable at Nongsa Digital Park in Batam on July 20, 2026. This critical infrastructure project signifies a transformative shift in the regional digital landscape, effectively reinforcing the digital gateway between Indonesia and Singapore through a high-capacity, low-latency subsea link. The landing ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation including the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Gan Kim Yong, and the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Hotmangaraja Panjaitan. Other notable attendees included the Managing Director Business-2 of Danantara Indonesia Setyanto Hantoro, the Deputy Governor of Batam Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, and the senior executive leadership from Telkom, Telin, BW Digital, and Nongsa Digital Park.

Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that the digital transformation of the nation requires the support of robust physical infrastructure and intensified connectivity. He noted that the Nongsa Changi Cable serves as the physical foundation for a new digital corridor, further cementing the status of Batam as the primary digital gateway of the country. This strategic advancement is projected to bolster the position of both nations within the global digital ecosystem, fostering substantial investment and driving innovation through technology-centered economic activities. The cable system spans approximately 50 kilometers and utilizes 24 fiber pairs, representing one of the shortest and most direct routes across the Singapore Strait. As a vital component of the Indonesia Cable Express ecosystem, the Nongsa Changi Cable operates in tandem with the Indonesia Singapore Cable System to provide unprecedented network resilience and high-capacity connectivity tailored for cloud services, artificial intelligence, and hyperscale data center interconnections.

The Managing Director of Danantara Indonesia, Setyanto Hantoro, remarked that strategic investments in infrastructure are essential catalysts for growth across all industrial sectors. He asserted that the cable will generate a significant economic multiplier effect, enhancing national economic resilience and industrial competitiveness. This sentiment was echoed by the President Director of Telkom Indonesia, Dian Siswarini, who highlighted the commitment of the group to strengthening national digital sovereignty. She stated that the Nongsa Changi Cable represents a strategic collaboration that creates mutual benefits, providing Singapore with enhanced route diversity while integrating Indonesia more deeply into the global digital value chain. Adding to the technical significance, the Director of Wholesale and International Service of Telkom Indonesia, Budi Satria Dharma Purba, explained that this new corridor will support artificial intelligence-ready infrastructure and ensure the reliability of international network routes for enterprise and digital businesses.

From the perspective of international partnership, the Chief Executive Officer of BW Digital, Ludovic Hutier, noted that the successful landing proves the efficacy of strategic alliances in delivering critical regional infrastructure. The cable is a core element of a broader digital ecosystem that includes terrestrial fiber networks and a massive 144-megawatt data center campus in Batam. Furthermore, the Chief Executive Officer of Nongsa Digital Park, Mike Wiluan, declared that the landing marks the evolution of the park into a fully integrated hub where connectivity, cloud platforms, and global talent converge. He confirmed that the park is now officially a primary destination for domestic and international subsea fiber optic cables. By combining resilient international networks with expanding digital facilities, the project is poised to shape the digital future of Southeast Asia, driving long-term investment and technological excellence across the region.
